Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

Well, while we had talked about it for a couple of weeks, this morning we decided to go out to the new Nationals Park and enjoy an afternoon baseball game against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. It was a first time professional baseball game for Max and Jen. Max got to see a home run early in the game and spent the rest of the game asking, "Are the fireworks coming?" The Nats won in a nail biter 9-8. The new stadium is really nice. The bathrooms are clean, the food is great and even the cheap seats are good. Being up high turned out to be pretty cool. We could see the dome on the U.S. Capitol from our seats. We took the metro in, which turned out to be very convenient. The metro station is about a block or two away from the gate pictured above.

Max was a great fan. He would ask me for the name of the Nationals player at bat and then yell, "Ryan Zimmerman, keep your eye on the ball!" He seemed to be a pretty big fan of Zimmerman, Willy Mo Pena, and Austin Kearns.

On the way in, Max made friends with everybody on our train car. One gentleman complimented him on his Nationals hat and ended up engaged in conversation and given a demonstration on the various ways a hat can be worn. The man was also informed that Max was going to a baseball game "for the very first time" and was planning on cheering for the "Nationals Guys". Max also got to talking with some younger guys who had come in late last night from Pittsburgh to see the game. He talked to them about cheesburgers and the Wizards game he went to last December. He pretty much knew the entire train car by the time we got to the stadium. On the way home he fell asleep just as we got on the train and I had to carry him almost the entire way home. Thanks again to the random couple that gave us their seats on the train so we could both sit down. I am not sure who was struggling more, me or Jen. It was hot in there and we were both carrying kids.
I am glad that Max and Jen got to enjoy a home win for their first live professional baseball game. They really made our first pro game as a family a good time.

I really wish we had MLB in Salt Lake. Triple AAA just doesn't cut it.

I took my nephew Dylan to a Red Sox game last week. I can't wait until Logan is old enough to go, it sounds like you guys had a great time.

I'm so glad that you have chosen to share the world of baseball with Max. I remember how excited I was every fall for the World Series - and I remember Roger Merris & Mickey Mantle playing when I was in 6th grade. (I had a teacher who would actually excuse us to go to the auditorium to watch the games @ PGJS. I'm glad you are starting to identify with the Nationals - and you'll have to buy some new ball caps when you come to UT for the game at BYU.
